The FTC says cancelling Uber One could take 23 screens

The US FTC sued Uber, alleging people were signed up for Uber One without consent and that cancelling could take up to 32 actions across 23 screens. In December 2025, 21 states and Washington, DC joined the case. These are allegations; the case is ongoing.

What happened

01

The FTC filed the complaint in April 2025.

02

It alleges some people were charged before their free trial ended.

03

It alleges cancelling could take up to 32 actions across 23 screens.

04

Why this is a design failure

A cancellation maze keeps people paying for something they have already decided to stop.

The fair alternative

Let people cancel in the same place, in the same number of steps it took to join.

Do

Make cancelling as easy as signing up.

Don’t

Don’t hide cancel behind many steps.

Company response

Uber said its sign-up and cancellation processes comply with the law.
